Road hazards of the segment of Xinjiang-Tibet Highway in Xinjiang and their primary cause analysis

The segment of Xinjiang-Tibet Highway in Xinjiang Autonomous Region is located at the west and middle section of Kunlun Mts. Debris flow, water erosion, landslide, collapse, snow drift, snow avalanche, permafrost etc. develop expansively and cause tremendous damage to the highway due to the complicated characteristics of geo- morphology, geology, tectonic movements, climate and hydrology. There are 291 disaster points, including 149 debris flows, 3 landslides, 74 water erosion, 33 collapses, 7 snow hazards, 25 permafrost and salivary ices, which frequently block the traffic and cut the highway line. The developing tendency of hazards along the highway is fore- casted in the paper.
