XU Wu-cheng1,WANG Wen2,MA Jing-song3,XU Deng-yao1(1.College of Land and Resources,China West Normal University,Nanchong 637002,China;2.State Key Laboratory of Hydrology-Water Resources and Hydraulic Engineering,Hohai University,Nanjing 210098,China;3.Department of Urban and Resources Sciences,Nanjing University,Nanjing 210093,China)
Based on a new sea surface temperature(SST) climatology for the base period 1971-2000,a review is given for the definition of ENSO events and their indices.According to the oceanic Nin~o index(ONI) since 1951,18 El Nin~o events and 13 La Nin~a events were identified. Finally,ENSO events and their intensities from 1951 through 2007 were classified.Result shows that the El Nin~o events that occurred in 1997 and early 1998 was the strongest since 1950.
