Control of Wood Borer Larvae by Releasing Scleroderma guani in Chinese Fir Forests

QIU Ling (Forestry Department of Huazhou City, Guangdong 525100)  
The results of releasing an external parasitic wasp Scleroderma guani Xiao et Wu to control the wood borer Semanotus bifasciatus sinoauster Gressitt during a 3 years period are reported in this paper 62%-64% parasitism rate were obtained when the wasps were released at 2500/ha, but parasitism decreased if the number of the wasps released exceeded 3000/ha After 1-3 years trees attacked by the beetle drooped from 39% to 1 7%-2 1% in the treated areas, and the larval density decreased from 3 7/tree to 0 02/tree Damage resulted from the beetle borers in 4680 ha of the fir forests were almost completely eliminated These results suggest that application of the wasp is one of the most effective way to control the wood borer in the subtropical Chinese fir forest
