A Rapid Method for the Simultaneous Analysis of Benzene Metabolites by Reversed-phase High-performance Liquid Chromatography

A rapid method for the simultaneous analysis of benzene metabolites including muconic acid (MA), catechol(CA), hydroquinone (HD) by Reversed-phase High-performance Liquid Chromatography(HPLC) was developed and applied to urine samples. The optimized detection parameters were as follows:the column was C 18 analytical column, the mobile phase was formic acid-tetrahydrofuran-water(14:17:696),the phase flow rate was 1.8ml/min,the UV detector was set at 270nm.In optimal experimental conditions, the added standard recovery of MA, CA, HD in urine was found to be in the range of 81%~93%. The relative standard deviation(RSD%)was found to be in the range of 2.4%~4.6%. Therefore,the method might be used widely in the field study after urine sample pretretemnt.
