Stress-induced Stomatal Closure in Relation to Compartmentation and Redistribution of ABA in Intact Leaves of Vicia faba L.

With immunogold electron microscopy stress-induced redistribution of ABA in leaves has been studied.Water stress could lead to an evident increase in ABA content in the apoplast of the epidermis, while ABA content in mesophyll cells remained constant at the earlier stage of water stress compared to that of controls (Plate I.1~4 F Plate Ⅲ. 5, 6 ). Guard cells conjoined large amount of ABA even before water stress, which was mainly located in chloroplasts and nuclei, and the ventral wall and the near outer wall,and inner wall also contained huge amount of ABA,but there was little ABA in dorsal wall (Plate I. 5-7; Plate Ⅱ. I - 2). During stomatal closure the ABA content in dorsal wall increased sharply (Plate Ⅱ. 3, 4 ),which indicates that the stomatal movement had a close relationship with the compartmentation and redistribution of ABA in guard cells.The possible mechanisms of stomatal closure and ABA redistribution under water stress have been discussed.
