Accumulation of Betaine Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Induced by Drought and Salt Stress in Sugar Beet Leaves

The antiserum formed against theBADH from spinach leaves were allowed to cross-react with the crudeBADH preparation from sugar beetleaves (Fig. 2 ). The accumulation ofBADH in the leaves or leaf discs wasdetected by immunodiffusion method.When sugar beet seedlings were subjected to a salt stress of 300 mmol/L, theaccumulation of betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH) was about 2 foldshigher than that in control leaves(Fig. 3). The BADH in the sugar beetleaf discs floated on a solution of NaCl200 mmol/L for 13 h was also 2  ̄ 4folds higher than that in the controldiscs (Fig. 4). When leaf discs weresubjected to drought stress of - 0. 65 ̄ -2. 6 MPa for 18 h,the BADH induced in the leaf discs increased about 2 ̄ 4 folds (Figs. 5, 6 ); These resultspointed to the importment function ofBADH in the adaptation to drought andsalt stress.
