Effect of Soluble-Fiber on Lipoprotein and Lipid Levels in Rats Fed Hed High Cholesterol-Containing Diets

Serum and liver levels of cholesterol TC, serum HDL-C and LDL-C, histopathology were determined in weanling SD rats fed diets, containing five dietary fibers(oat, guar gum, hippophae-rhamnoiders bran“HRB”, wheat bran and agar) enriched with 1% cholesterol.After 4 wk, the serum TC and LDL-C, liver TC concentrations were significantly decrease in rats fed diets with bean gum,oat and HRB. Only the serum HDL-C concentrations was siginificantly increased in oat diet to compare with the control diet (hypercholesterlemic diet).The HDL-C/TC ratio was significantly increased in every diets, except for agar diet. Hepatic histopathological examinations showed that the diets with guar gum,oat and HRB had lipotropic effect.It could be conclued the soluble fiber,especially oat and guar gum has substantial hypocholesterolemic effects.
