Preparation of High Purity Lanthanum by Combined Method of Lithium-Thermal Reduction and Vacuum Distillation

The combined process of Li-thermal reduction and vacuum distillation for high purity La was feasible after analyzing the thermodynamics and dynamics.The influence of the reduction temperature,reducing agent and holding time in argon atmosphere on the metal yields was investigated.The results showed that the appropriate conditions were reduced at 950 ℃ for 1 h,and reducing agent surpassed by 10%.The yields exceeded 95% with this method.To reduce the pollution of gas impurities and water absorbed by chloride,the reduction process and vacuum distillation process were integrated together in the same device,high purity La were produced in the end.The absolute purity of La by this method was 99.974%,and the relative purity La/TREM was bigger than 99.995%.The total rare-earth impurities content was 42.7 μg · g-1,the other metal impurities content was 100.1 μg · g-1,and the C impurity content was 20 μg · g-1,S impurity content was 20 μg · g-1,O impurity content was 56 μg · g-1,and N impurity content was 20 μg · g-1.
