Objective: To investigate whether polysaccharide from Polygonum multiflorum Thunb(PPM) potentiates the immunological function in immunosuppressed mice. Methods: Immune suppression was induced by cyclophosphamide(Cy) in mice. Then, the mice were treated with oral PPM at 0.4,0.8,1.6 g·kg-1 daily for 10 days.Phagocytic percentage, phagocytic index in peritoneal macrophages(PMφ) and esterase positive rate of T lymphocytes were observed by microscopy. The content of serum hemolysin was determined by spectrophotography.Proliferative rate of lymphocytes within the splenocytes was detected by 3H-TdR incorporation. Results: PPM significantly inhibited Cy-induced weight loss of immune organs and the decrease in the number of blood cells. It significantly increased the phagocytic percentage and phagocytic index in PMφ,the contents of serum hemolysin, the esterase positive rate of T lymphocytes and ConA-induced proliferation of splenic T-lymphocytes.Conclusion: PPM can potentiate the immunological function in immunosuppressed mice.
