Primary Extra- and Intra-axial Brain Tumors: Differentiation by Using Perfusion MR Imaging

Purpose To evaluate the potential of perfusion weighted imaging (PWI) in differential diagnosis between primary extra and intra axial brain tumors. Methods Sixty nine patients with primary brain tumor (43 intra axial, 26 extra axial) underwent contrast material enhanced perfusion weighted MR imaging, relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) and mean transit time (MTT) of tumors and white matter (WM) were calculated. Q rCBV that represented the rCBV ratio of tumor to WM and rMTT that was the difference MTT between the tumor and WM were obtained. The student t test was used to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in Q rCBV and rMTT between two groups. Results There was no statistically signifcant difference in Q rCBV between two groups, but the rMTT of primary extra axial tumors was longer than primary intra axial tumors with great significance. Conclusion PWI is very useful in differentiating primary extra axial tumors from intra axial tumors. [
