Objective: To investigate the analgesic and sedatire effects and physical dependence effects of essential oil of Radix angelicae dahuricae (EOAD).Methods : Analgesic effect in rats and mice was observed by body-torsion, hot-plate, radiate-hot and tail-flicking method. Meanwhile, the physical dependence and tolerance, free movement of mice were examined by jumping, tail-erecting, hot-plate method and with programme-controlled box. Results :EOAD exerted a definite analgesic effect on stimulation induced by physical and chemical substance and has a markedly inhibitory effect on free movement of mice . Jumping reaction and tail-erecting reaction were not found in EOAD group. Conclusion : EOAD exerts a definite analgesic and sedative action on mice and has no physical dependence.
