Effect of Melt Temperature on the Compound Phase of High Silicon Aluminum Alloy

Using SEM and x-ray diffraction,the effect of melt temperature on the morphology,size and composition of the compound phases in high silicon aluminum alloy containing 0.4~1.2% of Mg、Ni、Mn and Cu has been studied in this paper.Two kinds of compound phase AlMgSiNiMn and AlSiCuNi(Mn) have been identified in the alloy.Superheating melt can refine AlMgSiNiMn phase,but cannot refine AlSiCuNi(Mn) phase.The thickness of AlSiCuNi(Mn) phase increases with increased melt temperature.Superheating melt influences the composition of the AlSiCuNi(Mn) phase.When the temperature is higher than 1 000 K,manganese is detected in the AlSiCuNi(Mn) phase.Comparing with superheated melt,the melt mixed from superheated melt and the melt just above its melting point has much stronger effect on the compound phases.After this treatment,the morphologies of the AlMgSiNiMn phase and AlSiCuNi(Mn) phase are changed from large plate with pronounced edges to small grain with unpronounced edges,and their sizes are decreased from 30 μm~40 μm to 5 μm~10 μm.
