Role of Zirconium in Magnesium and Magnesium Alloys

As a new type of engineering material, magnesium alloy has many unique advantages. The addition of trace element Zr into magnesium alloy can refine the microstructure, enhance the mechanical properties significantly, reduce the inclusion and improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys. The effect of zirconium element on various properties of magnesium alloys and the mechanism of the grain refinement were discussed. The adding Zr ways during preparing process should be the emphasis in the future.
