Investigation of Microstructure and Property of Mg-(Y, Nd, Gd)-Zr Alloys

The effect of rare earth element yttrium, neodymium and gadolinium on the microstructure and property of the magnesium alloys with both as-cast and heat-treated states was comparatively investigated using optical microscope,scanning electron microscope, hardness testing and electric tensile. The results show that the three rare earth elements addition can refine microstructure and improve hardness and strength of magnesium alloys, especially the alloys after aging treatment. The addition of rare earth neodymium is the best one in refining grains and improving strength under the same conditions.
