Effect of Several Alloying Elements on Microstructure and Properties of As-Cast Magnesium Alloys

The effect of the rare earth elements Y, Nd, Gd and metal element Zr on the microstructures and properties of as-cast magnesium alloy was investigated. The results show that the rare earth elements Y could improve the microstructure of the as-cast magnesium alloy and refine grains of the alloy. The element Zr can further refine grains of magnesium alloys on the basis of the refinement of rare earth elements Y. The rare earth element Y, Nd, Gd and element Zr can significantly improve the hardness of magnesium alloy due to the grain refinement strengthening, solid solution strengthening and second phase strengthening.
