Experimental research on tensile behavior of lap-welding joints of HRB500 steel bars

A total of 90 pull tests were carried out on lap-welding joints of HRB500 steel bars,to investigate the effect of diameter of steel bar,number of welding side and weld length on the tensile behavior of specimens.The failure mode,bearing capacity and average joint strength of specimens were studied based on the experimental results.Two alternative types of failure modes were observed during testing,namely fracture of weld joint and fracture of steel bar,respectively.Test results show that when fracture of weld joint occurs,increasing the weld length leads to a higher bearing capacity,while the average joint strength decreases.Double-side welding could reduce the strength of steel bar on the edge of weld joint.Eccentric loading can cause joint lifting which decreases the bearing capacity of weld joint.The suitable welding method and weld length for the two types of steel bars tested are given based on experimental and analytical results.This paper can serve as a reference for the application of welded closed stirrups using HRB500 steel bars of minor diameter.
