Finite element analysis of the combined connection with bolts and welds

In this paper,the Finite Element Method(FEM) is taken to analyze the failure mode and carrying capacity of the combined connection with bolts and welds.The FEA results are compared with those come from experimental investigation.Further analysis based on FEM is performed to research the failure mode and bearing performance of the combined connection and the contribution of bolts and welds.It is shown that when the strength of one of bolt or weld is much higher than the other,the connection with lower strength fails first,whose carrying capacity can be fully used,while the carrying capacity of the connection with higher strength cannot.The strength ratio between bolt and weld affects the carrying capacity.When designing the combined connections,the influence of the strength ratio of bolt and weld should be considered.The combined connection with welds and bolts,which has advantages of both weld and bolt connections,can be widely used in reinforcing the joint in steel structure.
