Design of rootstalk foundation for Maanshan Yangtze River Bridge

In order to solve the defects of mechanical characteristics of traditional caisson foundation,a new type foundation is presented for the anchorages of suspension bridges,which is called the rootstalk foundation.According to the design plan,the field measured data is adopted to analyze the influence of rootstalks on the foundation.Then,finite element analysis of the rootstalk foundation is carried out to support the design of the rootstalk foundation.Finally,a simplified calculation formula is summarized for design engineers to calculate rootstalks.It is shown that the rootstalk can obviously enhance bearing capability of the foundation,and the rootstalk foundation is reliable for the anchorages of long span suspension bridges.
