Preliminary Study on the Free Radical-Scavenging Activity of Gynostemma Extraction

Wen Han et al (Department of Bioengineering, Anhui Agricultural University, Hefei 230036)
The scavenging effects of Gynostemma extracts on super-oxide radical(O  2),which was generated from light reaction of NBT, were assayed in vitro. It was shown that extracts from three kinds of Gynostemma had significant capacity of scavenging O  2, but there were different activities among the three kinds of Gynostemma;and that the light taste kind (a variety) had the most activity, the scavenging activity of its extract and its leaf extract on O  2 were 51.49% and 74.08% respectively. The radical-scavenging activity of extracts could be decreased by heating, especially treating with activated carbon and diatomite.
