An understanding of influences of site variables on surface soil organic carbon(SOC)concentrationis i mportant to plan future land use for carbon sequestration and sustaining agriculturalproduction.This study was conducted to clarify the effects of site variables(soil order,texture,altitude,acidity/alkalinity and land use) on surface SOC concentration of zonal soils of China.Theresults showed that the SOCconcentration was generally correlated significantly with the selected sitevariables(p0.001) and the correlation was stronger in un-cultivated soils than in cultivated soils.The ANOVAfactorial model esti mated that the contribution of site variables to the variation of SOCconcentration was 24.7 %in cultivated soils,48.5 %in un-cultivated soils,which was 6.6 %and 10.4 %higher thanthat described by univariate multiple regressionanalysis,respectively.Relatively weakcorrelations and less explainable variance observed in cultivated soils suggest that actual controllingfactors over SOCconcentration differ fromthose in un-cultivated soils.
