Phylogeny and Classification of the Tribe Astereae(Asteraceae)

Zhang Xiao Ping (Department of Biology)
The tribe Astereae has been analysed cladistically by means of a computerized parsimony program(Hrnnig86),using the Anthemideae as out-group.24 representative genera were sampled from 23 generic groups in the whole tribe as terminal taxa; 26 morphological characteric were chosen with a great care for the analysis. The results of the analysis are presented on a con-sensus tree and one cladogram. The cladorgam are 60 steps long, with a con-sistency index of 0.67 and a retention index of 0.72.Three major monopyletic subtribes can be recognized:The Grangeinae subtribe(9 genera), the Sol-idagininae subtribe(46 genera),the Asterinae subtribe(117 genera),the lat-ter including the Bellidinae, Hinterhuberinae,Conyzinae, and Baccharidinae, these four subtribes are derived within the Asterinae, and hence reduced to synonymy. Key to three subtibes were given;Several intercontinental relation-ships indicate that a geographical subdivision of the tribe should be abandoned.
