Association between Primary Dysmenorrhea and Traditional Chinese Medicine Constitution Type in Female College Students:A Meta-analysis

Objective To investigate the distribution of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)constitution types in female college students with primary dysmenorrhea,and to provide a basis of evidence-based medicine for the prevention and treatment of primary dysmenorrhea in female college students.Methods The databases for Chinese and foreign articles were searched for studies on the association between primary dysmenorrhea and TCM constitution.R software was used for the meta-analysis of rates in cross-sectional studies,and Review Manager5.3software was used for the meta-analysis of case-control studies.Results A total of 10 studies with3 327patients(2 117 patients with primary dysmenorrhea and 1 210 patients in control group)were included.In the patients with primary dysmenorrhea,the patients with yang-deficiency constitution,qi-stagnation constitution,normal constitution,qi-deficiency constitution,and blood-stasis constitution accounted for 25.48%[95%confidence interval(CI)18.04%-34.70%],24.71%(95% CI 18.97%-31.50%),19.60%(95% CI12.33%-29.71%),17.92%(95% CI 10.18%-29.63%),and 14.17%(95% CI 9.03%-21.55%),respectively.The meta-analysis of the case-control studies showed that yang-deficiency constitution[odds ratio(OR)=2.75,95% CI 1.38-5.47],qi-stagnation constitution(OR=2.93,95% CI 1.63-5.25),normal constitution(OR=0.17,95% CI 0.05-0.59),qi-deficiency constitution(OR=1.73,95% CI 1.15-2.59),and blood-stasis constitution(OR=2.62,95% CI 0.99-6.92)were risk factors for primary dysmenorrhea infemale college students.Conclusion Yang-deficiency constitution,qi-stagnation constitution,qi-deficiency constitution,and bloodstasis constitution are major constitution types and risk factors for primary dysmenorrhea in female college students.
