Social Support and Internet Addiction Among College Students: the Mediating Role of Self-Esteem

Objective: To explore the relationship between self-esteem, social support and Internet addiction among college students.Methods: 650 college students in three universities in Anhui province were tested anonymously by using Internet addiction diagnostic scale,self-esteem scale and social support scale. Results:the results showed that social support negatively predicted Internet addiction among college students on the basis of gender control and whether or not they had both male and female friends. Self esteem plays a full mediating role between social support and Internet addiction among college students. Conclusion:social support has an indirect effect on Internet addiction among college students,and self-esteem plays an intermediary role in both.
