Review of the 4th Chapter of Jackendoff's Foundations of Language: Universal Grammar——A Cognitive Balance in the Acquisition of Language

LI Liang-jie(Henan College of Finance Taxation Foreign Languages Department, zhengzhou 451464,China)
In this chapter,Jackendoff researches into concrete language materials and people's different opinions of Chomsky's UG and illustrates his own opinions on language acquisition. He points out that the key factors in the acquisition of language are the initial state of the mind and the primary linguistic input, which both play a role in language acquisition. The present writer agrees with Jackendoff, and at the meantime thinks we should strike a cognitive balance in the question of language acquisition,a balance between the nativism and the stimulus-response theory.
