Liu Zongzhao Huang Gongkang ( Deparlmcnl of Orthopaedic Surgery, Bengbu Medical College, Anhui )
Trauma, infection and local injection may cause fibrous of muscles of the first web space of the hand. Since 1971, we have surgically treated 110 patients with the conditon. Among them were 3 cases of hand deformity of thumb-in-palm and radial deviation of the index. All the contractures originated from injection of antipyretic drugs into the first intermelacarpal ipace during childhood, leading to ' severe malposition and function loss of the thumb and index finger, The preoperative deformity was completely corrected and the function was completely or nearly restored. We take the view that the deformities must be fully corrected during operation. In addition to tenotomy and tendonlengthening, capsulotomy of the carpometacarpal joint of the index is required. It is pointed out that functional exercise is very important postoperatively.
