Problems of Laboratory Test for Soft Rock in Nanning Basin

The gray lagoon deposited mudstone layers is characterized by weak consolidation as its important property.On the other hand,it will be difficult to determine the weathered degree of soft rock,affected by sediments- ry formation of soft and hard layer alternate.Engineers are experience dependent,it is difficult to determine the weathered degree of soft rock in site investigation works,because the soft rock has been destructed during drilling op- eration.Due to the borderline state of the characteristics of both rock and soil behavior for mudstone,whether it is taken as a rock or soil will be a problem for technician in site investigation and lab test to plan and finish the test.To indicate the borderline between hard and soft rock behavior,a simple,convenient and feasible method is presented with judgement by the stability of mudstone in water.
