Study on Centrifuge Model Tests of Soil Arching Effect between Piles

Wang Cheng,Wang Dong,Chen Xiayu,Liu Xiaojie(Department of Tunnel and Geotechnical Engineering,Chongqing Jiaotong University,Chongqing 400074,China)  
Reasonable spacing of anti-sliding piles is one of key parameters in the design.Based on the centrifuge tests of such pile in clay with the net spacing of 4d,5d and 6d(pile diameter),the shape variation and failure state of soil arching are analyzed.The results indicate that when the pile spacing is quite big,the loading state of soil arching will tend to be that of the beam because of the smooth curve small vector height,so it is difficult to form the stable soil arching;and that when the pile spacing is rather small,the loading state of soil arching will tend to be compressed because of the large vector height,so it is easy to form the stable soil arching.That is to say,with the increase of pile spacing,the effect of soil arching will weaken.Meanwhile,the failure mode of soil arching in different pile spacing is theoretically analyzed.The conclusion that the reasonable net spacing is as large as the 4 times of pile diameter is put forward,which is of great significance to the design of such pile.
