Risk Control in Slurry Shield Break-through Construction of River Crossing Tunnels

Recently,slurry shield has been often adopted in the construction of river crossing tunnels in Shanghai,through which rich engineering experience has been gained in this particular area.The Qingchaosha Water Transport Tunnels Crossing Yangtze River has been taken as the background project,in which two slurry tunnel boring machines of Φ7075mm in diameter were used,and continuous tunnel boring over 7.17 km has been achieved.Major engineering difficulties,including alignment control,stabilization for excavation face and sealed/impermeable control for shield tail,have been encountered and dealt with during the break through of the shield.In view of the importance and risks of the break-through of shield,the current paper is to focus on the related preparation work and risk control measures during the construction of TBM break-through from the perspective of risk control,in which the application of such methods including vertical jack-up for survey positioning system,breaking through under water and cutting off shield tail were proved to be successful.The relevant experience could be a good example to other TBM constructions.
