A Modified Method of Selecting Initial Centers of Joint Orientation Data

Dominant occurrences of joints in rock mass are necessary for the design of underground projects. The dynamic cluster method is found to be feasible for the determination of dominant occurrences,but the demand of initial cluster centers is one of its disadvantages. In this paper,a modified max-min distance method of selecting initial cluster centers is proposed. An item of density is added into the distance calculation. This modification moves the initial centers to the high density zones and it means that the calculated centers are closer to the actual dominant occurrences. Case studies show that the calculated centers are not sensitive to the radius for density calculation. The clustering results based on the modified method give lower values of objective function. It indicates that the modified method can provide more effective initial centers for the dynamic clustering.
