Design of Tailwater surge-chamber in Underground Powerhouse of Hunan Jiangya Hydropower Complex

Among the three major caverns( main powerhouse,main transformer cave and the tail-water surge chamber) in the Jiangya underground plant project,the tail-water surge chamber accommodates the highest level of flood,and is the highest cavern. It is under long term adverse condition of operation. The high altitude of the tail water it accommodates also asks for flood protection of the plant. To ensure the stability of surrounding rocks of the cavern,and to secure the plant safety during the flood,two-dimension and three-dimension finite element calculations were adopted in the project to simulate the surrounding rock's stability. The transition process simulation of the plant is also adopted to ensure the requirement of regulation and flood control for the plant. Nevertheless,a number of hydraulic model tests have been undertaken to validate and optimize the design. By employing resistant tail-water surge chamber,and standardizing the plant operation procedures to minimize the water level of surge,in the design the height of the cavern was decreased,hence it not only ensured the stability of the surrounding rock and the plant's security during the flood,but also economically optimized the project through tremendous reduction of workload.
