Evaluation of Maximum Shear Modulus of Soft Clay from Seismic Piezocone Tests(SCPTU)

The compression modulus is an important parameter for soil deformation calculation.The previous methods to obtain the compression modulus were generally based on the laboratory oedometer test,which was time consuming with low accuracy due to disturbance from sampling,transportation and storage.This paper summarizes the methods to determine the compression modulus based on the piezocone tests.Also,it counts the shear wave velocity and the compression modulus in different clays from foreign references and Yangtze River floodplain area data.A method to determine the compression modulus from the shear wave velocity is proposed,the effectiveness of different empirical methods was compared according to the piezocone tests at three typical sites in China with the SCPTU system.It was shown that the method based on shear wave velocity less than 200 m/s was sufficiently accurate for determining the compression modulus less than 10 MPa.Therefore,it is notably suitable for use in engineering practice.
