Geotechnical Characteristics of Sewage Sludge for Final Cover of Landfill

Modified sewage sludge used as landfill final cover is the disposal way between safe disposal and resource utilization,which is still in the stage of feasibility study.Orthogonal test on sludge with lime,cement,silt and fly ash as modified materials was performed.The suitable modified scheme to obtain sludge meeting final cover requirements was confirmed,and the performance of this modified sludge was studied.The silt in modified sludge can play a skeleton role for increasing the strength,and the role of cement is roughly similar to that of fly ash.After 3days curing under indoor natural conditions the modified sludge with proportion of sludge:lime:cement:silt:fly ash= 100:15:5:70:10 can meet the requirement of strength and hydraulic conductivity for final cover.Further study for this modified sludge shows that the saturated sample is of high strength and strong shrinkage.So it is very important to prevent dryness for avoiding the adverse effects of the dry cracks on the hydraulic conductivity.
