CORRELATION OF SERUM URIC ACID LEVEL WITH BONE MINERAL DENSITY AND FRAX FRACTURE RISK IN ELDERLY MALE PATIENTS

Objective To investigate the correlation of serum uric acid level with bone mineral density and fracture risk as calculated by the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool(FRAX)in elderly male patients. Methods Fracture risk(evaluated by FRAX score)was calculated for the included elderly male patients based on the clinical data in the Fracture Risk Assessment Table;the bone mineral density of femoral neck,lumbar vertebrae 1-4(L_(1-4)),and hip bone as well as fasting serum uric acid was measured.The correlations of different serum uric acid levels with bone mineral density and FRAX score were analyzed. Results The bone mineral density of L_(1-4) and femoral neck gradually increased with increasing serum uric acid levels in elderly male patients(β=0.517-0.811,P0.05);the fracture risk gradually decreased with increasing serum uric acid levels(β=-0.227 and-0.188,P0.05). Conclusion Serum uric acid level in elderly male patients is positively correlated with bone mineral density and negatively correlated with FRAX score.Low uric acid level may be a risk factor for fracture assessed by FRAX.
