Objective To study the possibility of transesophageal cardioversion of atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation by using electric balloon electrode. Methods Transesophageal cardioversion was performed with the use of electric balloon electrode. Results Of the 26 atrial flutters failed to drug therapy, 24 were countershocked to sinus rhythm by transesophageal cardioversions. The success rate was 92. 3%. Transesophageal cardioversion required a mean energy of 22.08±4.19J.Of the 11 atrial fibrillation, 9 were countershocked to sinus rhythm by transesophageal cardioversion. The mean energy was 18.01±9.85J. The successful rate was 81.8%. Conclusion Transesophageal cardioversion with electric balloon electrode was an effective treatment for atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation. It required low energy, no anesthesia, and showed high successful rate of cardioversion and could be applied in the clinical practice.
