Objective To investigate the effects of acute intravenous dripping administration of magnesium sulfate on blood pressure and plasma endothelin(ET-1) concentration. Methods The effects of acute intravenous dripping administration of 25%magnesium sulfate 10ml (Mg2+ 4.88mmol) on plasma endothelin1(ET1) concentration, systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) were studied in 10 subjects with mild and medium degree of systemic hypertension, using a random, selfplacebocontrolled, doubleblind, crossover design. Results Compared with pretreatment and placebotreated group, magnesium sulfate decreased significantly SBP, DBP(t=2.53—5.27, P0.05, 0.01) and plasma ET-1 concentration(t=2.53—5.27,P0.05,0.01. Conclusion The results indicate that the lowering of plasma ET-1 concentration may be one of the mechanisms of antihypertensive effects of maganisium sulfate.
