Geophysical Mapping of Permafrost Using TEM

The permafrost table and base are two of the most important geological variables in near-surface deposits in the continuous permafrost regions,and they are possibly to be determined either by invasive and environmentally destructive techniques(excavation and drilling) or noninvasive low-impact geophysical methods.Geophysical techniques are the most effective way to examine the spatial distribution of subsurface geophysical properties to reveal the active layer and permafrost layer horizontally and vertically.In this study,combination of few excavation and drilling data,transient electromagnetic method(TEM) was used to search the distribution features of permafrost table and base in various places in the Wenquan area of the eastern Tibetan Plateau.Despite that it was reported rarely in permafrost regions,the TEM is able to detect the table features of permafrost.Also,the TEM can characterize the base features of permafrost effectively.It is very promising in permafrost investigations.
