A Probe into the Animal Protection Order in the Song Dynasty

YAN Guo-fang;College of History and Culture,Henan University;
The Song Dynasty was a period when Confucianism,Buddhism,and Taoism gradually reconciled and tended to unify. The ecological concepts in the three thoughts provided the ideological foundation for animal protection in the Song Dynasty. Song Ting stipulated the type,time,and area of animal protection by issuing a decree. On this basis,the intensity and strength of animal protection were strengthened by adopting measures such as strengthening publicity,establishing reward and punishment mechanisms,and improving market management. Out of the Song Dynasty animal protection orders have the characteristics of specificity,flexibility and political purpose. The promulgation and implementation of the Song Dynasty animal protection edicts have,to some extent,reduced the phenomenon of indiscriminate killing of animals,playing an important role in the continuation of animal species diversity and the maintenance of ecological harmony.
