An Investigation into the Dialect Performace of Senior High School Students in Fuzhou

Taking senior high school students in Fuzhou as subjects,this paper investigates their dialect competence,dialect attitude and dialect performance.The results show that a few senior high school students are fluent in Fuzhou dialect and some students become receptive bilinguals.In terms of language attitude,their emotion to and evaluation on Mandarin is higher those of Fuzhou dialect,but they still retain their emotional identification to Fuzhou dialect.Mandarin,however,is their main communication language.This study discovers that the intergenerational succession of Fuzhou dialect is not optimistic:1.Fuzhou dialect has been reduced;2.The area in using Fuzhou dialect has contracted;3.The level of Fuzhou dialect is closely related with acquisition age;4.Language competence,language attitude displayed a positive correlation with language performance.
