Estimate Model for Product Design Effort Based on Function Decomposition

Product design projects are faced with a problem of severe schedule and cost overruns,of which the underestimate of design effort during project planning is the major cause.In this paper,the authors first analyze the product design process based on function decomposition,then define the major effort-influence factors such as product complexity,technical difficulty,design team capacity and management complexity and finally present a product design effort estimate model based on function decomposition with an artificial neural network method.And the performance evaluation results reveal that the ANN model is a promising method to perform accurate estimates for engineering design projects.
