AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE AERODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF ROD-NOSED PROJECTILES——THE AERODYNAMIC EFFICACIS OF THE SEPARATING RING

The rod-nosed projectile is one that replaces the conical shaped or other streamlined noses with a rod-nose. It possesses a good static stability, yet a considerably larger drag. The paper analyzes variations in the forebody drag, the normal force and the pressure center with various angles of attack (from -2° to 4°) through wind tunnel experiments on models both with and without the separating ring on the stem at a Mach number of 3.01. It is shown that the separating ring can effectivily reduce the forebody drag as can be seen from the experimental data. The mechanism of drag-reduction is discussed from the resultant change of flow field, and the optimum location of the separating ring is analysed from the flow field and geometric retations. In order to define the specific position of the separating ring, the paper gives the position of the separating point s at which the separating point begins to shift back in the rod-nose flow field. Effects of the separating ring on the normal force and the center of pressure also analysed in the light of the experimental data.
