Status and Conservation Strategies of Bear Resources in Heilongjiang Province

ZHANG Ming Hai (College of Wildlife Resources, Northeast Forestry University\ Harbin 150040, China)
It is common knowledge that bears are large mammals with high economic, ecological and cultural value. Two species of bear, the brown bear (Ursus arctos lasiotus) and the Asiatic black bear (Selenarctos thibetanus ussuricus) are found in Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China. The results of surveys on a provincial scale during 1996-2000 were as follows: 1. The brown bear is widely distributed in forest areas throughout the province, but the Asiatic black bear is only found in the Lesser Khingan Mountains and the Eastern Mountains, including the Zhang Guangcai Ling, Laoye Ling and Wandashan Mountains. The northern distribution limit of the Asiatic black bear was around North latitude 48-49°and East longitude 128-129°. Although distinct changes have not taken place in the distribution of these two species, their core ranges have been shifting towards the centers of forested areas. 2 According to statistics on the survey data, there were a total of around 631±143 ( n = 4?639) brown bears and 1?110±293 ( n =4?639) Asiatic black bears in the Province. Brown and Asiatic black bear distribution densities were (0 002?2±0 000?5) indiv./km 2 and (0 006?5±0 001?7) indiv./km 2, respectively. In comparison with the results of a survey conducted by the Heilongjiang Provincial General Bureau of Forest Industry in 1992, the population had declined by 61 7% with an average rate of decline of 16% a year. This indicates that the bear resource in the Province is declining rapidly. 3 This could be the result of a) forest logging; b) disturbance of human activities; and c) poaching. Finally, management strategies for the conservation of bear resources in Heilongjiang Province are suggested.

3 YANG BAI-RAN(Institute of Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve, Jilin 133613) The food features and nutrient in bud-feeding periods were studied for Hazel grouse (Tetrastes bonasia amurensis) by way of dissectng crops and analysing their contents on the north slope of Changbai Mountain from 1983 o 1989. Hazel grouse's feeding bud begins in early October and lasts to late April. 64 Hazel grouse were hunter-harvested in bud-feeding periods and analysing the contents of the crops has shown that Acer mono, Populus davidia-na, Coryhus mandshurica, Betula platyphylla, Salix raddeana are the main food in this period (21.2%, 14.5%, 12.2%, 9.5%, 9.4%). The nutrient composition analysis the buds has shown that the buds that Hazel grouse fed contain more protein and high energy materials.
