Seeing the Tendency of the Scholarly and Poetic Styles in the Late Mid-Tang Dynasty from "Poems for Emperors

ZHAO Rongwei(The Dept. of Chinese Language and Literature, Yancheng Teachers' College, Yancheng, Jiangsu 224002)
In the late Yuanhe Period of Mid-Tang Dynasty, with the turning of the politics of the early Xianzong's rule, Yuan and Bai demoted the frauds of that time. Those "xinyuefu" poems lost the bases in reality. After going through the disillusionment and ups and downs in their official careers, the scholars of the Yuanhe period suffered so greatly that they lost their enterprising spirit and generosity. Bewildered and lost, they generally returned to self and tried to seek comfort in love affairs or leisure. So the extravagant style of Qi and Liang Dynasties prevailed. The compilation of the "Poems for Emperors" was just the embodiment of the mental state and aesthetic taste of the scholars at that time.
