Objective To investigate the relationship between HIV infection and the Duffy blood group polymorphism in the Nanjing population. Methods Peripheral EDTA blood samples were collected from HIV positive individuals. Duffy serological phenotyping were performed with commercial anti-Fya and anti-Fyb reagents. The genomic DNA was extracted and Duffy genotyping were performed by PCR-SSP. The genotyping results were compared with the frequencies of Duffy gene in the normal population which have been reported previously. Results A total of 334 cases with HIV positive infection were collected with 301 Fy( a+b-)( 90. 120%),32 Fy( a+b+)( 9. 581%),1 Fy( a-b+)( 0. 299%),and 0 Fy( a-b-) cases.Genotyping results were consistent with the serological results. The gene frequency of FYA and FYB were 0. 949 and 0. 051,respectively. In the preliminary report,FYA and FYB gene frequencies were 0. 953 8 and 0. 046 2 in the normal population. The two groups of Duffy blood group typing showed no significant difference( P0. 05). Conclusion Duffy blood type possesses little significantly difference between the HIV infected and normal population. Further studies may be required to investigate the relationship between Duffy polymorphism and HIV infection.
