Analysis of 400 mL whole blood donation status in Chengdu area, China

Objective To analyze the demographic characteristics of blood donors with different donation volumes in Chengdu area and the difference in 400 mL whole blood donation rates among donation sites. We believe this would provide solid reference data for blood collection, donor motivation and donation site establishment in the future. Methods Whole blood data recorded during Jan, 2016-Dec, 2016 was collected and statistical analysis was performed according to collection sites, opening frequency and basic demographic characteristics of blood donors. Results In 2016, 174 231 blood donors donated 183 857 bags of whole blood, of which, 164 605 donors only donated once,200 mL donations accounted for 1.89%, 300 mL ones accounted for 41.76% and 400 mL ones accounted for 56.35%. The 400 mL whole blood donation rate from regular donation sites(72.69%) was higher than that from the mobile sites(35.10%)(P0.01). the regular sites of suburbs(79.75%) was higher than that of the urban area(67.77%)(P0.01). the fixed vehicle donation site(76.44%) was higher than that of blood donation rooms(59.92%)(P0.01). The 400 mL whole blood donation rate of suburbs mobile site was up to 71.69%(P0.01). There were statistically significant differences between gender, age, occupation, education level, donation frequency, and ethnic among 400 mL donation volume donors(P0.01). In 2016, there were 46 regular blood donation sites in Chengdu. Among them, 20 were in-street donation sites in the suburbs and 603 were bus donation sites. The daily collection count was 55 people(20 785 mL). There were 11 in-street blood donation sites in the urban area and 1 157 bus donation sites. The daily collection count was 42 people(15 567 mL). There were 9 blood donation rooms in the suburbs open for 353 days. The daily collection count was 19 people(6 769 mL). There were 6 blood donation rooms in the urban area open for 1 520 days and the daily collection count was 10 people(3 395 mL). There were 304 mobile sites and 714 bus trips. The number of opening days in urban areas exceeded that of suburban area, but the daily collection in suburban areas was higher than that of urban areas. Conclusion There is still much room for improvement as of the 400 mL whole blood donation rate in Chengdu. We should encourage more male, aged 45—60 years old with low education, repeated donors to increase the 400 mL whole blood donation rate. For the higher 400 mL whole blood donation rate sites, we should increase the number of opening day and extend working hours. The increase of 400 mL collection rate can help to gain the blood collection volume without demanding more blood testing and blood component preparation workload. The safety of clinical blood transfusion is also improved.
