Effects of Tb~(3+) Self-sensitization and Gd~(3+)-Tb~(3+) Energy Transfer on Luminescent Properties of Silicate Glasses

The effect of Tb3+ self-sensitization and Gd~(3+)-Tb~(3+) energy transfer on luminescent properties of Tb3+ doped silicate glasses was investigated.Results showed that the intensity of blue emission decreases,but the intensity of green emission increases with increasing of Tb3+ concentration.Tb3+ self-sensitization takes place by the energy transfer in the manner of resonance between Tb3+ in silicate glasses,which is caused by the interaction between electric dipole and electric quadrupole.Gd3+ can enhance the luminescence of Tb3+ in silicate glasses by the energy transfer in resonance manner from Gd3+ to Tb3+ emission center due to the interaction between electric dipoles.
