Characteristics of Cold Spray Process

Cold spray is a rapidly emerging coating technology, in which the spray particles in solid state can be deposited through the plastic impact on substrate with high velocity under a low temperature ( 600℃). During deposition, spray materials experience only little change in microstructure and can avoid evident oxidation or decomposition. The principle of cold spray and the characteristics of particle deposition were reviewed. Particle velocity is an important parameter in cold spray process. There exists a critical velocity at 500-600m/s depending on spray materials. When particle velocity exceeds the critical velocity, the deposition efficiency is increased with an increase of particle velocity, and can reach 80%. Most metallic materials, even cermet materials can be deposited by cold spray process.
