Objective To Observe the effect of hospital-acquired infections on length of hospital stay and hospitalization expenses in the Neurosurgery of a tertiary hospital from 2014 to 2015and evaluate the economic losses induced by the hospital-acquired infections. Methods A statistical analysis was performed retrospectively on the infection sites, infection rates and the length of hospital stay and hospitalization expenses of the discharged patients in the last two years;the descriptive analysis, variance analysis, and rank sum test were carried out for the length of hospital stay and hospitalization expenses of the patients with or without hospital-aquired infections by using SPSS19.0software.Results There was statistical significance between the difference of overall infection rate 4.57% of 2014 and 3.27% of 2015(χ2=6.984,P=0.008);There was statistical significance between the difference of lower respiratory infection rate 2.75% of 2014 and 1.58% of 2015 which decreased by 1.17% compared with 2014(χ2=10.252,P=0.001);the hospitalization duration with hospital-acquired infections showed extended, compared with the patients without hospital-acquired patients in the year of 2014 and 2015(18.67 d,18.73d).There was no statistical significance between the difference of average hospitalization duration of 2014 and 2015(less 1.38d)(t=0.503,P=0.240).The total hospitalization expenses with hospital-acquired infections sharply increased in 2014 and 2015(61808.89 Yuan,84472.84Yuan),compared with the patients without hospital-acquired infections. There was no statistical significance in the comparison of 2014 and 2015hospitalization expenses,(z=1.157,P =0.247);however,hospitalization expenses in 2015 increased. Conclusion Hospital-acquired infections in Neurosurgery can markedly increase the average hospitalization duration and the economic losses of the patients,so it is urgent to take effective prevention measures to control the hospital-acquired infections.
