A PROPOSAL CONCERNING VNIFIED CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM OF SOIL IN CHINA

Up to now, a national classification system of soil has not been made out in our country. It is urgent to make the system. In this paper, the principle and the form of soil classification are stated briefly. Through statistics and analyses of practical data of more than 30 000 soil saples in China, and syntheses of the advantages of soil classifications from our country rnd abroad, the auther suggests a scheme of unified classification" of soil, in which soil is classified by comprehensively taking account of organic content, granulometric composition and plasticity chart.The comparison between the suggested scheme and some main classifications of our country shows that the scheme is the same as those by the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Industry and Civil Construction in coarse grained soil classification by particle size, but some slight difference from that of the Ministry of Hydro-electricity. Gravel sand and sandy soil are also classified. Fine grained soil classified by plasticity chart in suggested scheme is 86.1 percent same as that classified by plasticity index, and 83.7 percent same as that classified by plasticity chart of the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources. Besides the cross line of Ip = 10 is added, it is the same as the plasticity chart of abroad. Classofication of organic soil insitu discrimination and plasticity chart is similar to classification of geotechnical engineering and unified classification of soil of soil of the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources. In this point, it is more advanced than the former classification method of abroad and our country, so the suggested classification scheme can be considered as more suitable for the practical situation of our country, more reasonable, and classification system.
