The Advantages,Disadvantages and Dialectical Use of Primary School Chinese Textbooks Regarding Gender Formative Education

Elementary school Chinese language textbooks are rich in gender formative education material,with titles revealing characters' gender social appellation,illustrations showing characters' gender appearances and the portraits of the features and temperament of different genders. These materials are useful for sex enlightenment education. However,they also bear the disadvantages of gender stereotype. Teachers are expected to infiltrate gender concept to the students by using these materials dialectically: make known gender concept clearly with the help of social appellation in the titles; display imitation models with the different gender appearances in the illustrations; provide gender social role experience with the characters' activities in the texts.
