OSCILLATORY CHARACTERS OF MODULATED ROSSBY WAVES IN THE ATMOSPHERE AND LOW FREQUENCY OSCILLATIONS IN THE MIDLATITUDES

The osciliatory characters of modulated Rossby waves described by the third-order Zakharovequation are investigated in detail.It is found that nonlinear modulation among Rossby waves for zonalwavenumbers 1~3 can excite 30~60 day Low frequency oscillation(LPO) in the midlatitudes whenL_y satisfies 3≤L_y≤4(2L_y is the meridional wavelength of each Rossby wave).However,when L_y≥3.5,nonlinear modulation among Rossby waves for zonal wavenumbers 2~4 can produce 30~60day LFO. Therefore,nonlinear modulation among Rossby waves may be one of the causes ofmidlatitude 3 0~6 0 day LFO.
